Once you have passed your learner licence exam, you can begin practicing driving with a supervisor. Remember to always display your L-plates clearly and to carry your driver’s licence with you. Before attempting to take the provisional licensing test, make sure you have logged at least 100 hours of driving time in your logbook.

You can buy L-Plates and holders from auto shops, service stations and other retailers. While driving, display them on both the front and rear of your car so the letter ‘L’ is visible from at least 20m away. If they are not displayed correctly, you and your supervisor may face demerit points or fines.

Your learner licence has distinct conditions in comparison to a provisional or open licence. For example, you must always have an authorised supervisor present when operating a vehicle, comply with the '0' alcohol limit and adhere to any extra conditions specified on your licence.

In order to get your licence in Queensland, there is a 'graduated licensing system' you have to go through from a L-plate to a P-plate to then finally having an open licence. This is so young drivers can become more proficient at driving before progressing onto harder roads and bigger challenges.

The Queensland Government has an online quiz that covers the road rules. This is a great way to test your understanding before taking your actual driving test. The quiz is available for those who will be driving motorcycles, cars or heavy vehicles.

Once you get your learner licence, it's time to start completing your logbook. You will be given this book when you receive your licence. If you're under 25 years old, 100 hours of supervised driving are required. However, if you're older than that, 100 hours isn't mandatory, but still recommended.
